I chose to watch Bonnie and Clyde this week. I have never seen it before and I walked away liking it very much. I have always heard the two names Bonnie and Clyde but to be honest I never knew what they did. I knew they were bad but not the existent of their crimes. Although after researching just a little after watching the movie I learned it is barely historically accurate. This kind of upsets me because of how much I did like the movie.
So while this movie was about an exhilarating tale of lovers on the run, it's barely true so I will just judge it based on the movie itself and not how is measures up to what happened actually. Something that surprised me a lot was at the beginning of the Bonnie was naked and while they didn't show anything I was surprised that a movie in the 60's would show that. I could be wrong but i'm pretty sure that nudity was very frowned upon in American cinema in that time. I liked the character development Bonnie received. She went from someone who was new to crime and thought it was fun and rebellious quickly to someone who lived that lifestyle and had to take several measures to stay alive. I like that she hated Blanche. I'm not entirely sure why but it just seemed like it fit. To me it made it much more realistic. I think showing things like this made the character's seem more relatable even though they were doing for most un-relatable things. I like the scene when they capture Gene Wilder and buy him burgers. This I thought was pretty funny aside from a pretty serious film and kind of let the audience breathe in-between all the rough shootouts. This as we have learned is technique Shakespeare would use and I thought it was cool I could recognize this. But also showing a scene like this again makes the characters feel more like humans rather than the infamous criminals we all know them as. All in all I thought it was a very solid film. I thought especially for it's time it was done very well.

So this id the first movie of the long list that you gave me that I decided to watch. I basically just picked one at random. I was pretty surprised to see the actually huge amount of star power this movie had though. Although I'm not sure if all those actors had become super famous yet. This is definitely not the film that would make you famous. However, for me, this is that perfect horrible movie that I tend to love. The movie is aware, I feel, that it's not a massive budget movie and that things will look unrealistic and I really like movies like this. This film also really epitomizes the 80's for me. This movie came out in '88 and I feel like at this point everyone really knew what a 80's film looked like and I think this movie just put all of the things that make an 80's movie an 80's movie into one film. There are neon lights, bad costumes, bad hair, cheating, Hospitals, police, car chases, spaceships, dumb surfers, and the list goes on.
I feel like movies of this nature you can tell exactly what's going to happen. I was actually almost proved wrong at the end when she almost got back with the doctor, and I was about to be very surprised, but of course Mac's magic didn't work for no reason and she went away with him. I think I've seen many movies that follow this same format and basic plot. The movie first introduces the main protagonist and introduces a problem, and then it introduces with thing that will eventually solve said problem, then they will probably go to a party, then get into some trouble and need to solve that smaller problem, then when they solve that problem an answer to the big problem will be present. For example Karate Kid I feel does this same format. It shows him moving then that the one blond kid will be a problem and his solution to this will be karate. Then he goes to the halloween party and gets chased by blond kid and his posse. Then he enters the tournament where he wins and beats the blond kid. Other movies that follow this format I feel are, 21 jump street, White Chicks, and probably many other movies I just can't think of now. I think the reason why I still will always love movies like this is because while you know the ending, it's the journey that you love. In this film the whole accidental convent store robbery and car chase scene I though was super funny. I loved the random songs. It wasn't really a musical but then it again it was which I liked oddly. Overall I think this was a great recommendation for me and I can't wait to watch more movie on the list. After discussing movies similar to Abbott and Costello in class I decided to get out one of the movies we own from the comedy duo. I used to watch their movies when I was little. Now it was kind of interesting how I could almost dissect the film and more understand what a high budget Hollywood film from that era would look like.
They use several things in this movie to make it funny. They kind of just pick a few routines and just do them as many times as possible while still developing the story. Lou's dancing is something that happened many times in the movie. As many times as possible he would bust out a dance move. Even in one scene music is being and he has to dance to it. He keeps dancing until he yells at the people playing to stop. They utilize the classic straight man and funny man routine. Abbott keeps on putting Lou in bad situations and Lou comically deals with them. Also in this film they constantly isolate Lou with someone and he uses several things to make jokes. He plays a pretty dumb character and uses his poor education to get confused at what people are saying. Then he will confuse them by being confused himself. Lou also constantly hurts himself whether it is getting is hand stuck in doors or burning it. It is pretty clear how big budget this film is. After learning about it in class I realized that they basically just pumped out the same movie many times. But these similar movies all probably made lots and lots of money so why would you not make the same movie many times. Although this is something I couldn't see the other countries we've learned about doing in their films. It's clear these films were to make money and laughs, but not really art. Overall I thought this movie was super funny. Lou is hilarious and it's crazy how he does the same thing every time but is just as funny as the last time he did it. I remember seeing advertisements for this movie and when I saw it on Disney+ I thought it would be a nice fun movie to watch. To be honest that it was. I think this is just another one of those good pizza night easy watch movies. But I do think there is actually several stuff done impressively well.
My favorite parts really about this movie is how it looks and how they navigate between real life, the video game, and seeing gameplay in real life. This movie is super cool looking. I kind of reminded me of wreck it Ralph but like not animated. I like how they made places look real but like places you would only see in video games. For example the one lair where Channing Tatum lived. The animation team did a great job in making Ryan Reynolds and all the video game character look like real characters in a video game when you would see gameplay in real life. I think the message is pretty cool too. To me the message is anyone can be the hero in their own story. While the odd are almost zero Guy is still able to become the hero for his story. Even as a background character the whole world can root for you. This is a pretty cool thing to me and while I think the main purpose of the movie is to be a funny Ryan Reynolds movie that sells well, I think the message was pretty cool. There were some things that weren't exactly my favorite. For example I didn't like that her video game character kisses Guy. I just kind of find it gross because technically guy is male version of her and it's like she is kissing herself which is weird. Another thing I didn't like was all the influencers they brought in to try and make the story seem more real. I honestly just hate when movies do this. This could be more of a personal thing and maybe others like it but for me it takes away from the movie. It draws attention to other things not the main story for me. In maybe a more realistic movie maybe yeah it could maybe do well but in this case, a movie about a npc character that just runs wild, it seems out of place even if it was real life those people would be making content about it. It's not a big deal, it's just something I've never liked. Also the game they're in is pretty much just GTA and I wish they coulda been a little more creative with the game that the npc came alive in. Overall, I liked this movie. It's a nice funny family night type movie. I was actually surprised there wasn't really any plot holes that I noticed because these types of movie tend to have lot. Also it has Ryan Reynolds so you gotta love the movie. This is just a movie I saw on my recommended on Netflix and it had Al Pacino and Keanu Reaves so I decided to watch it. I found this movie really good. It was very complex and there were several motifs that kept appearing. As pointed out by Milton (Al Pacino) Vanity is probably the major motif. The more and more vane choices Kevin (Keanu Reaves) kept making the worse and worse his wife and life itself got. So after the case ended and he got a murderer off that's when the world got absolutely terrible and everyone started dying horrible deaths.
I think this is a really cool story. I like how they used several techniques and music and special effects that progressively got stronger through out the film after every vane choice Kevin made. Kevin's is so obsessed with winning it doesn't matter how it comes. Then the way Mary Ann starts being demons and it progressively gets worse after each time Kevin chooses himself over her. I think it's a pretty cool concept. I thought the ending of this movie was pretty incredible. When Kevin went to confront Milton and the street of New York was empty, I think that's how you know he isn't in reality for sure. While weird and trippy stuff was happening before this really cemented for me at least that he himself was not in reality. The way they introduced Milton as the Devil was cool. When he dipped his finger into the holy water and it smoked was another indication Kevin was not in reality. Milton's speech about vanity was pretty cool as well. When Kevin shoots himself in the head he chooses free will over evil. So after this happened and you realize he was just daydreaming and then he throws the case, I thought, "Oh wow pretty cool twist ending". So I thought it was cool how his character changed. The pretty cool thing though is that while this probably deeply affected him, his vanity still came out in the end when he chose to be interviewed by the press. I think this shows a theme of the film, vanity is deeply rooted and is apart of the core nature of humans. I thought this movie was great. While I'm not normally a fan of thriller/horror films, I really enjoyed this movie and the story. I thought Keanu Reaves and Al Pacino turned in very impressive acting performances as well. You always talk about themes and motifs in class and in this film I really understood them and I think that's pretty cool as well. I decided to watch this movie because of the massive amount of oscars it was up for. I thought this film was great. There was many things I liked about the movie and I now know why it was nominated for some many awards. This movie lets you walk away with many questions. It also addresses homosexuality in a very masculine story which is cool too.
The character of Peter is obviously a very, very interesting. I think he could maybe be a psychopath. The movie shows several different instances where I think this could be argued. For example the killing of the bunnies. The first bunny kill you can kind of understand because while it is still horrible, you know he wants to be a doctor so maybe back in those days that's what you had to do to become one. Although it does seem like he feels no remorse. He treats the bunny like a pet which also makes it disturbing. That same feeling is felt the second time he kills the bunny. When he pets the bunny right before snapping its neck. At the end when he reading the book it also feels like another reason he could be a psychopath. He recites this verse and it seems like he is trying to validate the kill. I think he didn't like Phil immediately which is very understandable but, because he is psychopathic I think this is why he kills Phil even when he realizes he's just a weak guy with a strong front. Phil is another cool character. He is a closeted gay man who is very intensely masculine. I think that Bronco Henry was the very same. I think Bronco Henry is the man who made Phil realize he was gay. Now I could be totally wrong, but I think it's cool the movie leaves it all up to your interpretation. I think Peter actually manipulates this relationship so that he can kill Phil. When Phil sees that Peter probably realized he's gay and that's when he started to open up to him. This movie is gorgeous. It's no wonder it's up for the best cinematography award. There are several shots looking through windows in the house which is just so pretty. Also the movie uses very dull colors the whole time but the mountains and sky always look so gorgeous regardless. Also the very few times there are color it's when Peter has flowers or is looking in his book. This is how you can tell he's gay very quickly in the story. This movie was great and it's no surprise why it's up for so many awards. So I've been hearing so much about this movie so I thought I should finally sit down and watch it. I kept hearing it was really good but I'm always really scared when that happens because I feel like then my expectations are super high. So for this reason I was actually expecting to not like the movie. When I heard that the movie basically never leaves the house I thought well that's dumb. But actually it's really cool. The way the house is basically a million different locations but actually makes sense is super cool. (I've heard so many good things about this movie so I'll really only talk about my favorite parts.)
I loved Luisa's song. More what it meant than musically, I mean. It musically actually wasn't my favorite, but I think what it did for the story did a lot. It made the other's with gifts actually seem human or more relatable. Before they all seem perfect and this makes the rest of the family seem like Mirabell. Then later on in the movie they show Isabella as vulnerable in her song. She was doing something for the family but it wasn't noticed because she always is looked at for being perfect. It's pretty cool how the subject of mental health is addressed so well in a children's movie. The way they started the movie reminded me of Moana. Both start with a grandma telling basically the family/community's story to the main character as a baby. Then it zooms to present day and they sing a song about the life and being in the community/family. So immediately I kind of thought it was gonna be sometime type of Moana copy just with the Mexican culture. But it did immediately leave this with Antonio's gift ceremony. I like how the grandma is shown as imperfect given her treatment of Mirabell. I feel like her type of character in Disney movies is always shown as perfect for example the grandma in Moana, but her not being perfect shows that everyone as flaws and expectations which I think is really good. It's pretty cool how they show almost every character having trouble with their mental health, because most people do. I'm sure everyone in their journal's who liked this movie put that they like that she ended up without powers. I mean of course that's the perfect ending. At the beginning of the movie they say something like your power shows the best part of you or something like that. So Mirabell's gift is that she is great by herself. I think that is a great message. I think what this movie does so great is show the vulnerability of humans and how no one even if they have a gift or talent in perfect. I think it is done so tastefully and just sets a great example for children. While I'll probably never say this is my favorite Disney movie, just because I never watched it as a kid and it just topically wasn't my favorite, I can say this movie is a real work of art and has an incredible message. This was another Dolly Parton movie my dad said I had to watch. This movie basically was just a goofy comedy about three women who end up kid napping their boss. It was super funny. One of my favorite parts was when she thought she had his dead body and they open the trunk and he wasn't there.
This was Dolly Parton's first movie. She was really impressive in this movie. It was pretty much impossible to tell that it was her first movie. She was super funny and when she realized the office thought she was doing it with the boss I thought that was impressive acting. There is something about her she just seems super genuine. Even when she is kid napping her boss. I thought the music for the movie was very good. My dad told me that Dolly Parton only would agree to do the movie if they would let her write the music. That theme song she wrote I've actually heard before so I'd say letting her write the music was a pretty good idea. I love the way they kept him kid napped. With the contraption that whenever he did something they didn't like they'd press the button and he'd get zipped to the ceiling. I thought this was super creative. I'm happy they just didn't put rope around him and and something in his mouth so he couldn't scream. I feel like that's what is always done in movies. And what they did was super effective. Doing this made it super funny and almost just a bit of fresh air. Overall I really liked this movie. It was just a super fun movie. It was a nice comfort watch. This is one of my mom's favorite movies of all time. She has been begging me to watch it forever so we finally did. I was nervous as to as when I watched it whether I would like it or not. Im very happy to say that I loved.
I feel like the characters were super lovable. I really loved all of them. I liked how the president was surrounded by all good people. His whole staff was all likable. (Side note, I loved Michael J. Fox in the movie) They all had their own personalities and they were all like able. I think made you like the President even more. I feel like they made it almost impossible to hate the President. No matter what your political views are going into the movie, there is no way you won't like the president and no way you won't hate his competitors. This is movie I think I would be able to follow when I was younger as more of a love story. Which don't get me wrong it definitely is. But now that I'm older I can follow the political aspects of it better. A lot of it makes sense and seems super realistic. I find it funny a lot of the issues they're talking about then are the same today. I think it's pretty impressive how well they could mix a political story and a love story. I think they did a very good job of mixing all the things the president does into the movie as well. Including international affairs, military actions and so forth. They even do a good job of him just walking around the office and interacting with people. I like how every time he moves the secret service is there and announces he's on the move. The director Rob Reiner every time the President has to make a big decision does a slow zoom on his face. Then follows with cuts of all his staff members faces. I think while this doesn't seem like a super impressive cut it is a super impactful. It just really builds the intensity of the moment. This film was a super impressive romance-drama-comedy. While the base plot I feel like has been done before, Reiner does a great job of using the little details, and many impressive acting performances to really make this film shine. I really enjoyed this movie, Im not sure I could find anything wrong with it. This is a comedy I've heard about for a while. I've recently seen a couple Bill Murray movies so I decided why not one more. I can't decide if I like him yet. He's an interesting actor and his joke delivery and acting style are interesting and different. I like him at points but other times he just comes off as strange.
I thought this movie was fine. It had its funny parts which is expected. I liked the movie up until they went on the mission and had to save their division. I wish the movie would have ended when they graduated. In fact I thought it did and I was surprised when it wasn't over. What I liked about the movie was kind of lost when they went on the mission. I liked how it was about a dude who didn't know what to do with his life so he joined the army and it was hard but he came out a better man. While these types of movies have definitely been out there and they're common I would have liked this movie to be that type of story. It would have felt somewhat realistic while still being a funny comedy. But the mission lost all of that and it to me became one of those dumb comedy movies. Like it was two different films and I just wasn't a fan of that. I did like how they ended the movie showing the newspaper and magazine articles. It was a small and minor detail that didn't impact the movie but it was a cool touch. Im not sure, I'm just a sucker for when movies say what happened to the characters or show their future. To me it makes the characters feel more real. Overall the movie was fine. It was funny. Nothing really impressed me it was just another comedy I guess. I think it would have been a much better movie if it would have just ended after they graduated. |
